Effects of Foreign Direct Investments in India.

India is said to be the finest destination for foreign direct investments next to China. India was always the finest destination for foreign powers. The East India Company which came to India for trade purpose, decided to colonize India after seeing the resource in India, and disunity among Indians. Both India and China at first followed soviet model economic system and was reluctant to foreign direct investment, this system was a failure, so India and China liberalized their economic policy which includes allowing of foreign direct investment. The economy of India and China witnessed a rise only after allowing foreign direct investment.

India and China are said to be the emerging superpowers and foreign direct investment plays a very positive effect on it, but at the same time there are negatives too. Indian Government allowed 51% foreign direct investment in retail sector amidst strong resistance.Bharatiya Janata Party were the first to allow FDI,when they were in power.BJP did not face a strong resistance as Congress is facing now because BJP did not allow much FDI in retail sector.

India government claims FDI will create job opportunities. It is true that it will create job opportunities; but it also raises question, job opportunities for whom? For literates and illiterates.FDI will recruit people with basic educational qualification. The targeted audience of FDI will be only upper and middle class people who were slowly adapting to western style. In order to communicate with these classes of people certain basic education qualification is necessary.

In India and China basic education is compulsory for all citizens but the problem in India is, Indian Government will not check whether everyone is getting the basic free education nor it will take effort in developing the educational institutions or academic standards. In China they take measures to check whether everyone is getting free basic education, even then China is accused of being partial in giving education to the urban and rural. In India educational system is commercialized so the downtrodden could not afford to study in private institution.

Along with job oppurtnities, many will lose their livelihood. The middlemen were the most affected in FDI.The middle men includes wholesalers, agents, brokers and retailers. In FDI, the foreign companies will directly purchase products from the producers and sell to the consumers; this method will help farmers because they will get a reliable fixed price. The middlemen were always blamed of purchasing from the producers at a very low cost and selling to the consumers at a high price by fixing a high commission for them. This has lead to exploitation of farmers and consumers, but they play a major role in making the life of consumers easy by making the products available near their living place.

The life of a street vendor is different in India, they were poor and illiterates. They don’t even have the money to purchase the goods they want to sell. Every morning they borrow money for high interest and then purchase the goods they want to sell and in the evening whether they were able to sell the goods or not, before they return home they have to pay interest for the money they have borrowed. They sometimes return home without even a single paisa in their hand, if at all they earn, it will only be helpful in filling half of their stomach. In time of sickness or special occasions they will be forced to borrow a large sum of  money with high interest and they strive hard to repay it, sometimes they could not repay, this has lead to lot of suicides and hard labors.

FDI is not going to vanish the local retail stores. The local retail stores have established a name among its customers. In time of need they will lend goods and later collect money without any interest and also they will provide goods according to their need. In local retail stores it is not necessary that they have to buy as whole, they even give loosely, this will help the poor. So the poor will always be the loyal customers of these stores and foreign companies are not going to open its stores throughout India, It is going to concentrate mainly on cities. In case of urgent need, everyone has to approach local retail stores. It also raises question, if the poor lose their livelihood, can they afford to buy even in this local stores?

Can our businessmen compete with the foreign powers? First we have to change ourselves. No one can deny that we lack perfection and honesty. Foreign Powers show much concentration on hygeine, quality, customer care and in developing the existing business, we lack very much in these fields. Employee welfare is another important concept in FDI; this concept does not exist in Indian retail sector. Government should take steps in preventing the corruption in business and regularly check the qualities of products sold. Government should help the local business financially to compete with the foreign powers.

FDI supporters point out China’s economy, whenever there is a resistance. China is also facing widening inequality between the urban and rural population, which does not comes to light much.FDI will yield benefit to our nation and at the same time it will also widen the urban-rural gap. In order to eradicate this inequality, Government should create opportunities for rural people too. It is time for us to think innovatively and work hard to establish the pride of India. Government alone cannot do it; we citizens should also play a much important role along with government. Citizens should elect the party which is more favorable to the welfare of citizens, rather than parties that look for the welfare of those who favors them.

Oppurtunity to Exploit

I along with my friend went to a hotel to book a room. While we were booking,a group of young westerners who were staying in the hotel came and inquired the receptionist about the availability of clinic or hospital nearby. The receptionist who was able to communicate with a little English said that there is a clinic nearby but doctors will be available in the clinic only in the morning and said that in case of emergency they have to go to hospital which is situated 3 kilometers away from the hotel and added that the hotel will arrange for the travel.

The westerners said that it is not an emergency, they just need a check up and requested them to get an appointment in the clinic nearby and inquired about the price. The receptionist said that the hotel authorities will get the appointment and told them that it will cost around 1500 rupees for a consultation. We interrupted and told the receptionist that no doctor will charge such high amount for a consultation and told the westerners that it will cost only less than 500 rupees.

The westerners were staring at the receptionist and us.They were not able to take any decision. In the meantime the receptionist called some of the employees of the hotel and without knowing that my friend is an advocate, they started to threaten us saying that they will hand us over to police and told the westerners that we does not know anything. My friend asked them to call the police and handed over them his business card. When they came to know he is an advocate they started to talk with us in a friendly manner and said that they will give a commission from the money they get from the westerners. We warned them that if we came to know another incident such as this,we will file a case in the court.

We introduced ourselves to the westerners and inquired about their purpose of visiting India. We came to know that they are students who have come here for a project and they hired a room in the hotel temporarily as they could not get any hostel. We then contacted one of our professor and he arranged a hostel for them. The hostel will now take care of all their needs.Later,we came to know that they were exploited by so many persons in  India especially by Taxi/Auto Drivers,Small Shop owners etc.

Western Countries are very often blamed for exploiting our nation and influencing our culture. It cannot be denied that Western Countries are exploiting us whenever they get an opportunity, but what we do is also the same. The only difference between them and us is,they are doing in a large scale and we in small scale. Indian culture is said to be the oldest and richest. Our culture teach us to welcome the guest/tourist and treat them with full respect.

Are we true to our culture or we using it for our self gain? This question should be answered. It is the duty of each and every citizen of India to safeguard our culture. The exploiters should keep in mind that indirectly they are playing a part in destroying India. This is just one of the incident, there are several such incidents happening daily in India. The well wishers of India should take steps to prevent such kind of exploitation.Do not go as if you haven’t noticed anything when you come across such situations, you should voluntarily help the tourist. If we fail to stop exploitation,it will create a negative opinion on our culture.

A smoker may be a good person but smoke is always bad.

It is an open fact that active smokers are prone to various deadly diseases but recent studies suggest that passive smokers are also in the risk of getting deadly diseases. An active smoker is a person who is addicted to the habit of smoking and a Passive Smoker is a person who inhales the smoke emitted by an active smoker.

Smoking causes disease, disability and death in both active and passive smokers. Some of the disease are Cancer,Heart Problems, Lung Infections,Skin Disorders,Premature Birth,Infant death etc. It It is estimated that Active Smoking causes 6 million death per year and Passive Smoking causes 600,000 death per year.In Passive Smoking most often the victims are from the close circle of active smoker especially Children and Women.

Some argue that smoking gives relaxation and others have learned it considering it as style.A smoker will involuntarily falls into addiction and will find very difficult to rescue himself. They fail to recognize that it will give them only temporary pleasure and soon they will be introduced to a lifelong stress.

An active smoker in later period of life is forced to spend his wealth acquired through his hard work to medical bills due to the deadly diseases he is going to acquire because of smoking.Smokers do not think that how horrible it will be for them to undergo the suffering of the deadly diseases they are going to acquire because of smoking.

Active Smokers are now making others also to suffer with them and unfortunately the victims are often from their close circle. The smoke emitted through them by smoking is causing deadly diseases to those who inhale the smoke. It is a kind of cruel murderous act.It cannot be claimed that it is not a crime as there is no legal punishment. No punishment is more worse than guilty conscious.

If you have a human heart and do not want your loved ones to meet a horrible death due to your selfishness.Quit smoking today,If you have determination you can do it.Many Consultants are there to help you quit smoking.Do not be ashamed to approach these consultants because you are approaching them only for a noble cause.

Breaking Rules and Pointing Fingers.

India has the highest record of death due to road accidents and it is increasing year to year. This was reported in Global Status Report on Road Safety by World Health Organization.Who has to be blamed for this? Government or Law Enforcement or Citizens. Usually we consider larger issues like Drunk and Drive, Speeding as some of the cause but we should also take Smaller issues which leads to accident into consideration.

Indians are less knowledgeable towards Road Signs and Symbols. The Riders before obtaining a learners license will be taught of rules and regulations but they will forget at once they pass the test; they do not consider its importance and will not take it to their mind. If you ask riders to interpret a sign, they will find it so difficult. A person who follows the rules strictly will be forced to break the rules by other riders and he is the one who gets more scoldings than people who break rules.

The older generation often blames the younger generation for causing accidents but it is not true in all case. People from all age groups break the rules. The only difference is that the older generation does it in different method because they cannot attempt what the younger generation is doing. It is sad to note People who crossed their youth and has to be a role model for younger generation is so irresponsible in road.

People who crossed their youth can be divided into two groups. One group competes with the youth. When the yellow light is illuminated they raise their accelerators so that they can cross the signal before the red light is illuminated. When the red light is illuminated they try to occupy the front line and never stops before the stop line, they cross over the line and halt their vehicle on the Pedestrians crossings. The Pedestrians will find it difficult to cross before the illumination of green light.

When the green light is illuminated they at once raise their accelerators and move in a greater speed. The other group rides their vehicle very slowly and will not allow any vehicle to overtake them. Maintaining the vehicle is another important factor but no one cares about it before getting into the road they never check their brakes, petrol level, head light, indicators and especially do not adjust the rear mirrors and in some vehicle many important things will be lacking.

In India, No one cares about other riders; they take a sudden turn or cross the road without giving any signal or seeing the rear mirrors. They never care about going on a wrong side in one way and parking at no parking area. Vehicles will be parked in the road and they will open the doors of the vehicle suddenly without noticing anything coming behind them. Some vehicles will be parked on the corners of the road making other vehicles difficult to overtake, cross or turn in the road.

The riders will not care about warning board and carry passengers more than the limit.Factors like Drunk and Drive,            Speeding,Talking in Mobile,Chatting while driving,Friends riding side by side.Getting Tensed,Looking at the opposite sex and not concentrating on road should also be taken into consideration. The Government has to take steps to build planned roads and also the law enforcement should be given freedom to take severe action on those who break rules.

Everyone wishes a safe journey but whether everyone paves way for it is a question to be answered Citizens breaking the law for their self-gain and pointing the fingers on others will only cause more damage. In order to avoid road tragedies, Citizens of India should stop their blame game and everyone should be responsible in following the road rules.Traffic rules should be taught in educational institutions and examination should be conducted on road rules.

Only Idiots break rules of the road.

Temporary Relaxation to Lifelong Stress.

Brother,4 Tea and 3 Cigarette’s shouted Chelladurai,a teenage boy.He usually spend his evening time in this tea shop along with his three close friends who were elder to him.The shopkeeper immediately came out of his store and placed a chair for Chelladurai and cleaned the bench for his friends.Chelladurai was the son of a wealthy landloard of the village situated in south of Tamil Nadu.In his village, his family was well respected due to their genorosity.Chelladurai does not have any bad character but all his friends had.

Chelladrai spends lot of money for his friends. As usual Chelladurai was in the tea shop one evening,a relative of him came running towards him crying and informed Chelladurai that his father is dead.Chelladurai was now left with his Mother and an elder sister. The whole village was in grief. In the mean time Chelladurai’s Uncle (father’s younger brother) who was a history sheeter hatched a conspiracy to kill the remaining members of his Brother’s family in order to acquire the wealth.

This conspiracy has reached the ears of Chelladurai’s friends and without any delay they escorted Chelladurai and his family to a city far from their village. The villagers were afraid to oppose Chelladurai’s Uncle because of his involvement in anti-social activities. In the city for the first time,Chelladurai witnessed the hardship of  life.He was so depressed about his future. In order to relive him from depression, his friends introduced him to smoking which he resisted at first but later yielded and became an addict.Chelladurai’s Mother and Sister started working for a mere amount in a nearby shop.Chelladurai with the funding from his friends and villagers pursued his studies and landed in a high salaried job.

Chelladurai never forgot the help he got from his friends and villagers.Chelladurai was not interested to return to his village but he helped his villagers to get employment in the city.Soon Chelladurai’s sister got married and Chelladurai fell in love with one of his colleague and married her.A son was born to Chelladurai. On hearing from the villagers that his son resembles like his Grandfather,Chelladurai was too proud of his son.Chelladurai admired his father a lot and he has took his father as a role model and talk about him among his friends often.

Chelladurai though well settled now,was unable to leave his smoking habit.Chelladurai’s wife often advice him to quit smoking saying that it is harmful to him.Chelladurai too wanted to get rid of it but his addiction towards it,has tied him tightly. Some of his colleagues advised him to meet a consultant in order to quit smoking.Chelladurai considered it as dignity and refused to do so.

One day he got a call, his whole body began to sweat.Hurriedly he went into his superior room and requested for half a day leave and left the office tensed without saying a word to anyone.Chelladurai directly went to the place from where he got a call.It was from a private hospital. In the call, his wife has informed him that their son was in a serious condition due to lung problem, within minutes of his arrival, his son was pronounced dead.Chelladurai demanded the cause for the death from the hospital authorities.Doctor’s who treated his son informed him that his son died due to  passive smoking.Chelladurai’s heart broke into pieces.

Chelladurai’s guilty conscious pricked him to a great extent. He thought of committing suicide but remembered his wife and Old Mother and left the thought. He was mentally disturbed and behaved abnormally. His colleagues brought him to a psychatrist and was made to undergo Psychatric treatment. After years of treatment he gradually turned to be a normal human being. He as a new being realised his mistakes and started an anti-smoking movement.Though he recovered from his abnormality,He is still haunted by the guilt of being the cause for his Child’s death who resembled like his father whom Chelladurai admired much. This incident has created a lifelong stress in him.
